Built in 1996, Public School - 34 in the Bronx, is a school for mentally and physically challenged children. Shortly after it opened, the school noticed several areas of the basement were experiencing water leaks migrating up through the cracks in the concrete slab. Many areas of the basement are used to store various equipment and supplies, and the presence of moisture was unacceptable. A New York construction management company, (Bovis Lend Lease) was recommended by the New York City School Construction Authority (S.C.A.) to seek a solution to this dilemma.
Jean’s Waterproofing Inc. (JWI) was contracted and asked to propose a plan of attack to prevent any further water infiltration within the basement. After several visits to the site and taking test cores of the slab, it was decided the best approach would be to drill 1/2 inch holes through the concrete floor every 3 feet on the center in a grid pattern throughout the entire 10,600 sq. ft. of the basement. Then BBZ Duroseal Inject 2000 was systematically injected under the concrete floor, going from one injection port to the other, forming an acrylate ester gel membrane beneath the entire basement concrete floor.
The proposal was accepted, and JWI was ordered to proceed. Work began on Sept. 5, 2000 and was completed Oct. 18, 2000, and to the delight of all, the basement is now dry in all areas.
